Volunteer, learn about medicinal plants, rain forest survival techniques while living with the Shiwiar people in Ecuador

We have been working with the Shiwiar since eighteen years ago when The Shiwiar Rainforest Initiative began which was initiated by Sarah Dixon, when she worked on a project in 2000 to support the Shiwiar People by documenting their use of plant medicine and initiating an important archive to help preserve Shiwiar culture. Since then we have been sending interested volunteers to the Shiwiar to gain medicinal plant knowlege and rain forest survival skills.
The Shiwiar established an NGO called ONSHIPAE, over eighteen years ago, their territory is in the Ecuadorian Amazon near to the Peruvian border. The Shiwiar are closely related to the Shuar. The indigenous language is Achaur. Members who wanted to participate in the indigenous movement led by organisations such as OPIP (Organisacion de Pueblos Indigenas de Pastaza). ONSHIPAE is actively seeking ways in which to protect the environment and cultural heritage in the form of proposals to assist Shiwiar communities. ONSHIPAE is part of NASHIE the Shiwiar Nation of Ecuador.
The Shaman’s Aprentice Project
The Shamans Aprentice Project (S.A.P), is a pioneering project that supports indigenous tribes people and their rainforest plants that they use in their every day lives. Our project objectives are to keep the shamanic practices alive and to encourage younger indigenous generations to continue the tradition of their shaman elders, to continue to live untained in the rainforest, actively participating in restoring their ancient knowledge of rainforest plants by using advanced technology, supported by a number of participating rainforest and indigenous human rights organizations. We will be working with the Shiwiar in Ecuador for the first phase of this project.

The Shiwiar people belong to the same cultural and linguistic tradition as the Achuar and Shuar. Their territory is one of the most pristine and isolated places in the Amazon basin, located near the Peruvian border and accessible only by air with a 1 and a half hour flight over the Amazon, from Shell, near Puyo. The primary forest is blessed with remarkable levels of biodiversity. Their population of seven hundred is scattered around nine different villages within the area. There have been few intrusions into their territory and they have only recently made contact with the western world (because of the Peruvian war in 1941).
This is your chance to discover an unspoiled region of the Amazon rainforest, to really leave the beaten track behind and to immerse yourself in a culture that belongs to the forest. You can experience the incredible biodiversity of the area, and find real warmth, learn rain forest survival techniques and how they use medicinal plants. What makes this project different, is that it offers you the rare opportunity to escape the false ‘ecotourism’ trap, where community events are staged and the business is own by foreigners, channeling profits into their businesses not back into local hands. But not here, with this experience. The Shiwiar are completely self-managed. You will not be invading or disrupting their culture by using luxury hotels, the living is simple and non invasive, helping to preserve their heritage. This project offers you a wonderful opportunity to experience the jungle as it is, but more importantly to give something back to a community.

Los chamanes aprendiz proyectos (SAP), es un proyecto pionero que apoya a las personas tribus indígenas y su variedad de plantas que usan en su vida diaria. Nuestros objetivos del proyecto son para mantener vivas las prácticas chamánicas y fomentar las generaciones más jóvenes indígenas para continuar la tradición de los ancianos de su chamán, para seguir viviendo untained en la selva, participando activamente en la restauración de su antiguo conocimiento de la variedad de plantas mediante el uso de tecnología avanzada, con el apoyo por un número de participantes selva e indígenas organizaciones de derechos humanos. Estaremos trabajando con los Shiwiar en Ecuador para la primera fase de este proyecto.

El pueblo Shiwiar pertenecen a la misma tradición cultural y lingüística de los Achuar y Shuar. Su territorio es uno de los lugares más prístinos y aislados en la cuenca del Amazonas, situada cerca de la frontera con Perú y accesible sólo por vía aérea. El bosque primario es bendecido con un notable nivel de la biodiversidad. Su población es de setecientos nueve repartidos por diferentes pueblos de la zona. Ha habido pocas intrusiones en su territorio y que sólo recientemente han puesto en contacto con el mundo occidental (a causa de la guerra del Perú en 1941).
Esta es tu oportunidad de descubrir una región virgen de la selva amazónica, para dejar muy atrás de los caminos trillados y de sumergirse en una cultura que pertenece a la selva. Usted puede experimentar la increíble biodiversidad de la zona, y encontrar el calor real sin lujos. Lo que hace diferente este proyecto es que se le ofrece la rara oportunidad de escapar del ecoturismo falsa “trampa, donde se celebran eventos de la comunidad y el negocio es propiedad de extranjeros, la canalización de beneficios en sus negocios, no de nuevo en manos locales. Pero no aquí. Son completamente autogestionado y de propiedad local. No se le invadir o perturbar su cultura, sino ayudar a preservarla. Este proyecto le ofrece una oportunidad maravillosa de experimentar la selva tal como es, pero lo más importante devolver algo a la comunidad.
